Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and the Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries today announced Walgett Shire Council had secured a total of $8.3 million to raise the Walgett Weir and construct a fishway.

“Everyone in NSW deserves access to secure, reliable and high-quality water and that’s why I am delighted to announce this new funding that will improve the water security for Walgett, and maintain fish stocks,” Mr Humphries said.

“Raising of the weir will improve long term amenity of Walgett’s water.

“A portion of the funding, $3.6 million, comes from the Government’s Water Security for Regions program, with the remaining $4.67 million coming from the Government’s $1 billion Safe and Secure Water program.

“We understand that the community also view this as a great recreational location for Walgett, especially during the summer months and today’s announcement ensures that the Walgett community can continue to enjoy the weir for decades to come,” he said.

The project will raise the Weir by one metre and construct a fishway, providing water security for Walgett during dry spells while ensuring fish can travel the length of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers.

NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro said NSW communities depend on access to clean, reliable and affordable water, and wastewater infrastructure that meets environmental and health standards.

“With over 1.9 million people living in more than 500 regional NSW communities, it is vital we continue to invest in priority local infrastructure, and this is what our $1 billion Safe & Secure Water Program is all about.

“The Program prioritises key water infrastructure projects – from local drought backup systems through to new or upgraded dams to secure water supplies for our regional communities.

“Whether it’s a new water treatment plant or replacing outdated wastewater treatment plants our Safe & Secure Water Program will make a real difference to local communities throughout NSW,” he said.

Cr Ian Woodcock, outgoing Mayor of Walgett Shire Council said he welcomed the NSW Government’s contribution to the project.

The Safe and Secure Water Program is a $1 billion regional infrastructure co-funding program established in 2017 under the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Fund.
The Program co-funds eligible water and sewerage projects that deliver economic growth in regional NSW through improvements to public health, water security, environmental outcomes and/or social benefits.
