FUNDING ACCESS IN SUPPORT OF THE DROUGHT RELIEF

Thursday, 24 January 2019

• NSW Government providing grants of up to $300,000 towards costs of maintenance and improvements on council roads, eg shoulder repairs, road surface repairs and signage
• Recently completed projects which improve freight access for drought relief can be considered
• Improvements will be made to freight links that provide relief to other parts of the local road network

Kevin Humphries said today that Councils are receiving much needed funds to support the increased movement of stock, feed and water as part of the drought relief.

“The Liberals and Nationals in government have been working in partnership with Local Government NSW to evaluate submissions received by local councils across the state.

“Eligible councils can apply for up to $300,000 to help with road maintenance and improvements to accommodate increased freight movements.

“he Drought Relief Heavy Vehicle Access Program was announced on 21 October 2018 and offers an additional $15 million toward the cost of maintenance and minor improvement work on council roads and roadsides.

“These improvements will contribute to heavy vehicle access, in support of the drought relief task.

“The changes will support farmers impacted by the drought by improving heavy vehicle access on local roads, which has increased as a result of the drought conditions.

“Since the announcement, 23 submissions from 20 different councils across NSW have been evaluated. These submissions were assessed against the program criteria and are recommended for funding to the value of $5.8 million. Submissions will be assessed on a regular basis until the $15 million allocation is exhausted. The next evaluation is occurring in January with advice to councils planned in February 2019,” Kevin Humphries said.

The Liberals and Nationals in government have committed to providing:
• $300,000 to Central Darling Shire Council to improve various local roads
• $300,000 to Brewarrina Shire Council to improve Goodooga Brenda Road at Goodooga
• $150,000 to Lachlan Shire Council to improve Fifield Road at Tullamore
• $268,190 to Narrabri Shire Council to improve Warrior Street at Wee Waa
• $300,000 to Bourke Shire Council to improve Hungerford Road at Bourke
• $298,737 to Gilgandra Shire Council to improve Berida Bullagreen Road about 20 kilometres north of Oxley Highway
• $296,030 to Bogan Shire Council to improve Cockies Road about 3 kilometres from Tottenham Road
