Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries today announced Rachel Merton and Jade Kerin from Broken Hill were two of the successful recipients of a scholarship in a Diploma of Event Management, funded by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

“I am delighted to announce that Rachel and Jade are two of 18 recipients who will benefit from a Diploma of Event Management, thanks to the support from the NSW Government.

“The scholarship program is part of the NSW Government’s partnership with Australia’s peak industry body for business events, Meetings & Events Australia (MEA), which aims to upskill and create more job opportunities for rural and regional NSW communities.

“Rachel and Jade will be connected to an online community of students, providing a great opportunity for networking and learning more about the development and delivery of events from fellow peers.

“Broken Hill and the Far West already plays host to an amazing array of events and it is opportunities like this which help us with much needed expansion of our current tourism offering, while upskilling our local champions,” Kevin Humphries said.

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said almost 80 applications were received by Destination NSW since the program opened in February 2018.

“Due to the large volume of high-quality applications, we are offering three Diploma of Event Management scholarships for each of our Destination Networks, which is 12 more than we originally intended.

“This increase means we are committing an extra $78,000 to give more people across rural and regional areas better access to the tools and skills needed to kick start their career in an industry that is a key contributor to the State’s economy.

“It’s clear that people across rural and regional NSW are looking for extra support to expand and develop their skills in event management, and the MEA scholarship program will help them do this while delivering event growth in their local area.

“I congratulate the 18 scholarship recipients who are already making valuable contributions to their local communities and wish them every success as they kick-off their diploma studies and continue their career journeys in the events sector,” Mr Marshall said.

The 18 recipients were selected by a panel which included representatives from Destination NSW, MEA and the six Destination Networks.
