Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries announced Barwon had been awarded a total of $507,234 for six grants to support consolidation, closure and/or environmental improvements to landfill.

The grants have been awarded through a partnership between the NSW Environmental Trust and the NSW Environment Protection Authority as part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

Six western region recipients are part of 15 projects successful in accessing funding under the Landfill Consolidation and Environmental Improvements program. A total of $1,839,540 has been awarded in this round of the program. 

  • Goodooga Waste Facility in Brewarrina Shire Council - $22,143
  • Wilcannia Waste Facility in Central Darling Shire Council - $200,000
  • Narrabri Landfill Environmental Protection Project in Narrabri Shire Council - $101,153
  • Closing and remediating old Carrathool Village Landfill in Carrathool Shire Council - $19,200
  • Ivanhoe Waste Facility in Central Darling Shire Council - $63,585
  • Menindee Waste Facility in Central Darling Shire Council - $101,153

“I congratulate these councils for securing this funding,” Mr Humphries said.

“The grant program aims to support regional councils to address potential liabilities posed by landfill activities, reduce environmental risks, and contribute to the long-term protection of the environment.”

The grants aim to address current issues facing regional and rural landfills including end of life, minimal cover, site security and access and overall supervision.
